BCC NEWS: Bush’s ‘Israel bias’ angers Abbas
Date Published: May 18, 2008
Date Chosen: May 26, 2008
2. Summary
This article discusses how Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, felt that President Bush in his recent visit to Israel to celebrate their 60th anniversary, was biased toward Israel in his speech to the Israeli Parliament. President Abbas went onto say how President Bush lavished praise on Israel, while foregoing any comment or mention of the Palestinian people. What the writer noted however, was that during an interview with President Abbas prior to his state dinner with President Bush, there was no mention or hint of anger toward President Bush or his comments. President Bush’s during his visit to the Middle East, continued to advocate the call for peace, with a true belief that a peace can ultimately be reached in this volatile region. In Contrast, to his comments on President Bush’s Israeli speech, President Abbas defended President Bush’s belief in a peaceful solution against those who doubt a peace deal can ever be reached.
3. Reactions
A) The AP world history theme that relates to this article is, Impact of interaction among and within major societies. This relates to this article because the Middle East conflict between the Palestinian and Israel Nations has been going on for over sixty years, with other Arab nations siding with the plight of the Palestinian people.
B) The history of the issue is that over the past decades, American Presidents have considered Israel, one of America’s closest allies, in the fight against terrorism, and also in the Middle East reason in general, Although, Past president have tried to broker a peace between Israel and Palestine, little or no progress has ever been made.
C) The point of view of this article is one most likely by an Arab writer because the article calls out the President of the United States as being biased toward Israel. The writer of the issue seemed to know his/her facts and was very well-informed, however he/or she did very little to make President Bush seem interested and concerned about the Palestinian people even though he attended a state dinner with president Abbas.
D) The article may show some bias of point of view that may be impacting how the issue is being reported by the author feeling sympathy for the Palestinians. It was shown that the writer cared little about the history of the American and Israeli relationship, and more about the current relationship and lack of respect of President Bush toward the Palestinian people.
E) The point of view missing from this article is one of understanding the long history between the United States and Israel. This relationship has grown very deep over the past 60 years, with each country supporting the other. By understanding the history of this relationship, the author could have Cleary set the context for the President’s remarks that were made to Israeli parliament.
F) My reaction and insight to this article, is that, I feel and understand the author’s view of bias, even though I do not feel President Bush in this instance was attempting to ignore the Palestine nation. There is a time and place for President Bush to have an open dialog of support for President Abbas, and the people of Palestine if their country truly wants a peaceful solution, and I do not believe that a speech to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Israel is the appropriate environment.
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/Global_Markets/Food_crisis_a_threat_to_Latin_Americas_poor/articleshow/3080252.cms
May 28th 2008-The Economic Times
Summary- The people in Guatamala are recently experiencing big problems associated with their economy. Some of the poor live on about 1$ a day. Now a 550 million dollar donation is to be made to try to help the people. In the next two weeks the board will provide the money and begin trying to help out the poor. The IDB, (Inter-american Development Bank) is the benefactor and at a meeting the 550 mil was agreed on and now that efforts are beginning because if they wait too much longer recovery is going to be even harder.
Reactions-
- This article relates to theme of impact and interaction of and within major societies. The IBD is gathering people together to make decisions. Their interaction will make a huge impact on the poor society.
- As time progressed the people became more and more poor and times became harder and harder. Finally people are trying to help. If you live on 1$ a day life has to be very rough. It's now realized that if they let this go on much longer the recovery will be much harder.
- The author is most likely a male that is into the topic and has done a ton of research to support their information.
- The author speaks through other peoples quotes, most of which support the concept that without immediate action, the poor will fall even deeper into a place they can't get themselves out of.
- It would help to hear the point of view from a poor Latin American person that does live on 1$ a day and see how they are making it through and how they have made it through thus far.
- I think it's horrible that people are struggling so hard to survive while we live so luxiourisly in America. I also think that action being taken is the best thing considering there isn't much lower the poor can sink. It really shows us how fortunate we are and it also makes us realize that finally something is being done but it wasn't impacted at all by America, but it was influenced by other countries trying to put their money together to aid another country.

Burma Grants All UN Visa Request
Title- Burma Grants All UN Visa Request
Date Written- 5-29-08
URL- http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7425130.stm
II. Summary
As of today Burma has agreed to allow officials from the UN to provide aid to the people of the country. It took a while to establish this deal, but UN officials were able to persuade Burma into accepting the deal. Elections were also held to see how many Burmese people would want to have financial aid from other countries. (A tremendous amount of voters said they wanted foreign aid.) Only until recently did the Burmese Leaders agree to having foreign aid, before this decision these high officials wanted no help, the Burmese government believed they could handle the situation themselves. Burmese Leaders did not want aid since they had a fear that with foreign aid spies would come and study the societies. (Spies could make reports which could bring down the empires reputation.) Burma in not a well known country to many, hopefully because of foreign aid, ties between countries and Burma will continue to be stronger.
III. Reaction
· This article best relates to the theme, “Impact of interaction among and within major societies.” This article shows how Burma is being helped by other countries causing more interaction between these countries. Because of the help given stronger ties between Burma and other countries remain tight.
· At first Burma was part of British India, soon Burma separated itself from India causing it to be a separated colony under Non-British control; Burma is now a totalitarian dictatorship. Burma is a country in now a Southeastern Asian country whose economic status tends to be moderately poor, although this country is still well developed. Recently a cyclone hit causing thousands of death. This lead up to an agreement over foreign aid.
· We are not given any information as to who is the writer of this report. Therefore, we cannot make any conclusions based on this person, his or her nationality or gender.
· The author of this article makes biased references towards the junta (political leader) of Burma. The writer explains how his decisions on not wanting aid were wrong. He displays the junta’s reasons in a very negative tone, and emphasizes the junta’s reasons for not wanting aid as horrible excuses. While the author does expand on the junta’s first decision on aid, he only briefly explains how the junta has changed his mind on wanting foreign help.
· I believe the point of view of the commoners who need aid is missing. While we hear directly from UN officials and Burmese leaders, we do not here from the people who are affected. To get an account from a person directly related to the problem caused by the cyclone could help justify our stand on this topic.
· I believe that the Burmese government is doing the right thing by accepting financial aid. While the officials are rich they must understand that the commoners have lost their crops, livestock and houses. These peasants have nothing, not even a morsel of food to eat. Burmese officials should understand not to be offended to receive aid. By doing so we show our friendship with other societies, through this peace between counties and stronger bonds can developed
After Sureshot
http://www.economist.com/world/la/displaystory.cfm?story_id=11455759
II. Summary:
Manuel Marulanda or “Sureshot”, was the president of FARC, a danderous colombian guerilla insurgent (or as Colombia says, terrorist) group that was established in the 60's as a military wing of the Colombian Comunist party. Marulanda refused peace talks and never gave up his violent campaign. He, including two other members of the FARC's seven-man secretariat, Raúl Reyes Iván Ríos have recently died. Sureshot's death seems to be leading to the end of FARC as a danger to Colombia. For many years, FARC has been drug-trafficking, bombing, recruiting, threatening Bogotá (the capital), kidnapping, and refusing peace talks with the government. Now that Manuel Marulanda and several other major members are dead, FARC seems to be dividing and becoming smaller. Freddy Padilla de León (the armed-forces' commander) says that this is happening to FARC becasue “they are reduced militarily, isolated politically, have a reduced social base and we are cutting their finance (by acting against their drug business). " Actions against FARC have been made by the Colombian government. For example, Álvaro Uribe, the colombian president expanded security forces by a third and appointed 80,000 professional soldiers, backed them with a helicopter fleet, Brazilian tactical bombers and advice from the US in cutting off FARC's ability to communicate. These efforts of the goverment are now showing results, but there is one problem, there are signs Venezuela is helping FARC. By continuing its efforts, the Colombian government hopes to get FARC to start negotiating. The colombian government thinks after Sureshot's death, success doesn't seem far off.
III. Reactions:
- This article relates to the themem of State-building, expansion and conflict. This is because FARC is a rebel group that has been in conflict with Colombian goverment for around 60 years.
- Historical backround: FARC was established in the 60's as a military wing of the Colombian Communist party and originated as a guerrilla movement. It has been involved in drug-trafficing (in the 80's cocaine in particular), kidnapping, recruiting, bombing and threatening the Colombian government. All the while, FARC has continously refused peace talks and even after Marulanda's death Cano (new leader after Sureshot's death) said that FARC will continue in the “struggle for political power.”
- The point of view is that of a British outsider.
- The author is in favor of the Colombian government and against FARC, this is because FARC is a communist group that drug-traffics, kidnaps, bombs, and threatens Colombian government.
- Many are leaving FARC, they are referred to as deserters. I would like to hear from their point of view. This is because they would be able to provide their own insight and knowlegde. They are different from the main leaders of FARC (like Cano) because they would most likely have no reason to put on fake front of FARC's "struggle for political power" if it is really crumbling in numbers and other aspects (and starting to hand in the towel).
- My reaction is that I hope that the Colombian government is successful in defeating FARC. I also hope that what Freddy Padilla de León says about FARC's current decline is true.
Tamil Tigers bomb people of Sri Lanka
BBC News
Tuesday May 27, 2008
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/7421470.stm
II. This article is about how the president of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa, is upset because of terrorism attacks against his country. One attack was reported to injure at lest 70 people on a commuter train. The authorities are accusing the Tamil Tigers. The president says that he is committed to defeating terrorism and will not let up until it is stopped. The bombing occurred 4 days after an attack happened the Tigers’ territory, in which they Tigers’ blamed Sri Lanka for. Sri Lanka is also increasing in the number of battles fought around their country.
III. A) This article relates to the AP World History theme of impact of interaction among and within major societies. It relates to this theme because the Tamil Tigers and Sri Lanka are conflicting, and it is causing many deaths.
B) The Tamil Tigers is a militant organization, located in Sri Lanka. They constantly conflict with Sri Lankan government and are trying to secede from their nation.
C) The author of this article is not listed, but it is likely to be an insider.
D) The author seems to lean towards the Sri Lankan side of the story. He uses many quotes that support their side and doesn’t give the Tigers’ point of view. He most likely chose to do this because the Tamil Tigers are listed as a terrorist organization and may not care for them.
E) The point of view missing in this article is that of a Tamil Tiger. There are absolutely no quotes from a Tamil Tiger. If we had their point of view, it would help us get their side of the story and see if the Sri Lankan government has done anything bad to them.
F) I believe that the Tamil Tigers should stop attacking the people of Sri Lanka. If they want to secede, they should try to negotiate with the government instead of killing innocent people.
111 Nations Adopt Cluster Bomb Ban
II. On Friday a 12 day negotiation was finished in Ireland regarding the ban of Cluster Bombs. 111 Nations were in attendance and all officially banned the bombs in their nations. The signatories are required to stop production of cluster bombs, and to destroy any remaining bombs within the next eight years, and to fund projects to repair old-battlefields that were scared by cluster bomb duds. The supporting nations are planning sign the treaty in Norwegian capital Oslo in December. It would come into force in mid-2009. There were several large nations that didn't attend including, Israel, Russia, and the United States. These nations did not attend due to their opposition to the treaty. This shows that these nations have power and are afraid to give it up. Jerusalem said that Israel did not to attend because "it has to deal with well-known security threats and is opposed to a comprehensive ban on cluster bombs." Israel is widely criticized for their use of these bombs after the Second Lebanon War, where 40 innocent Lebanese were killed, including children, by the cluster-bombs. It remains unclear if these nations are ever going to give up these destructive weapons.
III. A) This issue relates to the AP World History theme of Impact of interaction among and within major societies. This article relates to this theme because the nations that were involved in this treaty were all in agreement, when the opposing nations were completely against this ban, this may cause some conflict in the future.
B) Cluster-bombs were developed in Germany during the Second World War and was named the German SD-2. As the bomb nears the ground it separates into many smaller bombs and blows up in all different areas around the main target zone.
C) The author of this article is a Jewish writer who is an insider on Israels situation. She knows exactly what is happening in her nation.
D) The author could be leaning toward Israels side like they are the correct ones. She defends her nation by giving quotes of their reasons for keeping the bombs.
E) The point of view of the other 2 nations was missing. I want to know why the U.S and Russia were not present. Although they oppose this act I feel they should have still been present at the meeting to express their opinions.
F) I feel like the 111 nations that accepted this treaty were taking a huge step towards more peace in this world. If there was less availability of weapons terrorism rates would steadily drop. I feel like it is very wrong for Israel, Russia, and the U.S to deny this. These countries push anti-terrorism so much, but when it comes to make an act that would drastically affect terrorism they do not take action. I feel like these nations need to step up for what they are doing.

"Peace will happen because it must"
The Jerusalem Post
http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1212041432424&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull
II. Elie Wiesel believes that it is impossible for a second Holocaust to occur. Although this is a good thought, anti-Semitism is still occurring in the world today. Wiesel blames the Intra-Palestinian issues for the delay of peace. He feels that it could have occurred already despite the conflict. He is also trying to prove to those who feel that the Holocaust was fiction that it really did occur.
III.
-This article relates to the theme, “Systems of social structure and gender structure.” This is a problem that is affecting the world socially because the Jews are being discriminated against.
-The Holocaust is what triggered this issue today. People are trying to stop the fear that something terrible that happened in the past will happen again today.
-Hilary Leila Krieger wrote this article. She is a female and an outsider because she is not Jerusalem experiencing this issue.
-I especially picked up on the point of view of Elie Wiesel. He is so certain that peace is near and that everything will be okay with the Jews, and that another holocaust will never happen again, but it seems as though he may just be in fear of it happening again because he is a Jew himself. He wouldn’t want another holocaust to happen. It is not to say that it will happen, but Wiesel may show some bias.
-I would like to hear from someone who is anti-semmetic. I would like to know if they are ready to make peace. Hopefully, they would be.
-I feel that the Jews have been discriminated against for too long and that the holocaust was an actual occurrence in history. Although, I would love to see peace, Wiesel does not seem to have a major plan to get there. He just states that it needs to happen.
Russia army suicides cause alarm
Russia army suicides cause alarm
May 29, 2008
BBC News
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7425694.stm
II. Summary
This article is about the large number of suicides in the Russian army. A total of 341 Russian soldiers, almost an entire battalion committed suicide in 2007, and although this is a 15% decrease from the previous year, it is still extremely worrying to Russia’s deputy prosecutor general, Sergei Fridinsky. It has been speculated that these suicides was due to extreme and often violent bullying. This might not necessarily be true though, as most suicides were committed by higher ranking soldiers who would not be prone to the bullying. It was also suspected that this issue was due to the extremely harsh conditions that Russian soldiers face during training and combat. Fridinsky suggested that the only way to get over this is to “use the experience of the US in Iraq and Afghanistan to help their troops deal with the psychological trauma of combat” that may be causing these deaths.
III. Reflection
Ø This article relates to the AP theme of “impact of interaction among and within major societies” because part of the problem is how the soldiers are being treated internally.
Ø This issue has gone back many years. The Russian army is known to be harsh and strict and these suicides have always been common, just not in the quantities that they are in today.
Ø Although a name is not given, you can assume that the author is an outsider.
Ø The writer definitely feels that the Russian army needs reform and feels that they are at fault.
Ø I would like to hear from a Russian military official to hear if the conditions are improving or if they are doing anything to help matters.
Ø I feel that the Russian government is definitely to blame. They treat the soldiers terribly and force all men to serve for at least one year in these horrible conditions. Even if nothing happens while they are on duty, the trauma might be so bad that something happens later in life.
World 'failing' on Human Rights
World ‘failing’ on Human Rights
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/7422528.stm
Wednesday, May 28
Summary: This article is about human rights violations. The UN has adopted a Universal Declaration for Humans Rights over 60 years ago, but people are still being ill treated in about 80 countries –maybe even more. Most nations know of the act, but not many are doing anything about it. China is being asked to end “re-education through labor”, Russia to show a greater tolerance, and the United States to give criminals fairer trials, officially ban all sorts of torture in prisons and such, and to shut down the Guantanamo Bay detention center.
Reactions:
A) The AP World topic this relates to is Impact of interaction among and within major societies, because the nations of the world are being asked to try and contribute to more human rights.
B) In 1948, the UN adopted a human rights policy called the Universal Declaration for Human Rights. However, people are still being tortured and mistreated.
C) I do not know who is writing the article, but it sounds like an insider, because they know a lot about what seems to be going on.
D) The author’s point of view could be skewed in that he points a finger at the United States a lot, saying that we’re constantly violating human rights.
E) I would like to hear from someone who has had his rights as a human violated. Everyone always says that this is a bad thing, and I know it is, but if we heard from someone who’s actually witnessed himself or has been the victim of a human rights violation, maybe it will push more people to act.
F) I’m disgusted that so many people in so many places can still be cruel to one another. Every person has the right to be treated fairly and with respect, but people still go on torturing and harming people anyway.
Iran warns it won't cooperate with IAEA
II. Summary: On Wednesday Teheran announces that because of the negative report they got from the UN nuclear watchdog they warned that they wouldn’t cooperate. Ali Larijani said that if a new report came out from IAEA than there might be a deplorable act of violence. Iran could be hiding information about their nuclear weapons. There have been restrictions made by UN Security Council and Germany to stop the enriching of uranium, which is associated with the developing of nuclear weapons. After Larijani spoke there were chants such as “Death to America” and “God is great”. Iran used to cooperative with the IAEA but as of Wednesday it refuses to cooperate. Why the sudden change? In the NPT it states that Iran does not have to allow short notice inspections of its nuclear facilities. Iran is no longer answering questions from western Intelligent Agencies.
III. Reactions:
A) The AP World History theme this article relates to is Development and Interaction of cultures because Iran is not cooperation with IAEA and UN Security Council.
B) Iran and IAEA have been very cooperative as of Wednesday. Iran has let IAEA perform the necessary inspections. Now it warns that it no longer cooperate with IAEA.
C) This article was written by the associated press from the Jerusalem Press. They would most likely be Israeli and their gender would vary.
D) You might want to approach this document with caution because the author might have been exaggerating the statement stated by Ali Larijani. You don’t know what the IAEA have done for Iran to warn them about their cooperation.
E) It would be nice to hear from an Iranian military officer who would have access to the nuclear facilities to better understand why they had to warn the IAEA.
F) I think Iran is hiding something from leaking out to the press and the other nations of the world. If they did not have something to hide than they would continue to cooperate with IAEA. There is no telling what they are hiding or if it is a nuclear weapon. I think we should press this issue and demand to know what it is that they are hiding.

Olmert Aide Puts New Pressure on Him to Quit
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/30/world/middleeast/30israel.html?_r=1&ref=world&oref=slogin
By Isabel Kershiner and Graham Bowley
May 29, 2008
II. Summary:
Ehud Olmert was pressured to step down his leadership skills. from the office when Tzipi Livini, his foreign minister, wanted preperations for new elections. Minister Ehud Barak told Olmert to step down because of the outcome of the corruption investigation. Ms. Livine didn't specifically say that she wanted Olmert to step down, like Barak did. Her comments affect the decision, since she was the first senior member of Olmert's party to start questioning his leadership skills. A Long Island business man gave Olmert $15,000 in cash mostly in envelopes. He said this was for campaign finances and personal expenses. “This is not just a legal matter and it does not pertain solely to the prime minister as a private person — these are questions that are related to the values and norms that we want to instill and their effect on the public’s trust in Israeli politics,” Ms. Livine said. “There are those who believe that the launching of any investigation demands a resignation, but I don’t adhere to this notion and I will not step down.” Olmert said. Mr. Olmert said that if he is charged, he will resign.
III. Reactions:
A) This article relates to the ap world theme, impact of interaction amongst a society. This is because, Mr. Olmert was charged with something that can make him resign from office, that would effect the society.
B) Olmert used to talk about Talansky as his "dear old friend". But, Talansky is also the banker and is the greatest contributer to Olmert.
C) The author is an american woman who is an outsider on this information.
D) This article should be read with caution, because it is saying more bad things than good things about Olmert. The author has talked to his employees and they all said negative things about Olmert.
E) The point of view that's missing from the article is from a member of the community. That will help me understand the situation better, because they are living there and have to deal with this everyday.
F)I think that if he is guilty, he should definetly resign. It will show that he isn't a good leader and isn't honest to everyone.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is Repaired ! ! ! ! !
I. Citation
“Pisa's leaning tower stabilised”
BBC NEWS
5/28/08
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7423957.stm
II. Summary
This tower existed for 800 years in Italy. The Leaning Tower of Pisa got its name because it kept bending towards the ground. People who lived in the 12th century realized that it was tipping gradually, but their repairs didn’t make it any better. Now, they stabilized the tower upright and it should stay like this for another two centuries. This process took about 10 years to do. Did it lose its true name though?
III. Reactions
1) This article relates to the AP World Theme: Impact of technology, economics, and demography on people and the environment. It relates to this theme because this building is affecting people who are surrounded by it. Advanced technology helped to fix this tower so it won’t collapse.
2) This tower is located in Italy. It’s about 800 years old now. Each year, the tower curves toward the ground by inches. That’s how its name originated.
3) The article is written by Mark Duff. He is a male BBC reporter from Milan. He is an insider on this issue because he lives in Italy.
4) I believe there is no form of bias in this article. Although, there are arguments about whether or not the tower is losing its name.
5) A worker’s point of view is missing from this article. I would like to hear from an Italian worker (who was helping to reconstruct the tower’s position) in order to gain a full understanding of the issue.
6) I believe that it’s good that they fixed the tower, but I feel that the tower is losing its significance. The tower was famous because it existed for a long period of time and it was basically bending more and more each year. Although, I am glad that the tower will be standing much longer!

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/28/world/europe/28terror.html?ref=europe

III. Reactions:
A) This article mostly relates the AP World theme of Systems of social structure and gender structure. I would say that this has the closest relation because the article talks about a woman dedicated to her religion and it is known that women weren’t looked upon as highly as men back in these time periods. She still takes the stand to find a way so that as a woman she can really be heard throughout her religion and speak to both the men and women of
B) The historical background of the issue is based on how the Muslims use to speak out to others and how this lady, El Aroud decides that she won’t follow her follow people of her religion and use her words instead of weapons and force to help. She may tell others to go and fight but she isn’t bombing cities or being irrational. She is simply just using another way to speak without force. Also, the idea of women’s rights are being reinforced and its speaking on how women now have the chance to really say what they want and have their own opinions is most society’s.
C) This article is written by a New York Times journalist. They have information from researchers in
D) The author’s point of view impacts the issue being reported by all the different ideals they go throughout this topic. The author is focused on showing how its better how women’s rights are changing. It makes the article seem more positive because it doesn’t talk about many negative aspects. They are mostly speaking about how things are improving in the society and that the more voices heard the better chance any area has of improving their society.
E) I feel a point of view missing within the article is one from a woman in another country facing the problem of having no rights as a woman. I feel I could have a better understanding of this topic with hearing this point of view because it could really show me what other women are going through and what an accomplishment these societies are having with improving how they treat their people and women these days.
F) I feel this article is very informational. I never really realized that women are looking for various ways such as the internet in other country’s just so they could help those who they care for and fight for what they believe in. It shows how hard some people have to work to earn their respect and have to really take a stand to prove a point as where in America we usually use our connections and status to get us around instead of finding more and more ways to really speak out to others when we need too the most. Overall, I thought this article was very good and I enjoyed reading and learning about this woman El Aroud and the right of women elsewhere from here today.

Iran Speaker Warns Nuclear Agency
BBC News 5.28.08
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7423235.stm
II. Summary
A lot of world power countries along with smaller countries have been nervous about the activities occurring in Iran. These countries are scared that Iran either has nuclear weapons, or is trying to make them. Iran responded stating that it is for “peaceful reasons. The IAEA voiced its concerns about the situation, but the newly elected speaker for the conservative-dominated parliament, Larijani has reported that the IAEA has been teaching and showing Iran how to make nuclear weapons.
III. Reactions
A) The AP theme that relates to this article is impact of technology, economics, and demography on people and the environment. This is because a relative new technology is out within the last hundred years. Only some have been able to grasp it and obtain and make it. While one had actually used it, twice, and everybody else has not even developed it yet.
B) During the Cold War the United States and U.S.S.R were at a nuclear arms race. Then after the U.S.S.R fell it was over, kind of. During the Cold War the U.S.S.R spread its ideas all over Asia and the Middle East. So Iran and Iraq are like satellites or just another generation and result of the Cold War and the U.S.S.R.
C) The author of this article is most likely from the United Kingdom and therefore would be considered an outsider.
D) There is not a lot of bias in this article except for the fact that there are no quotes from a person from the Middle East.
E) A missing voice from this article is the voice from the U.K or the U.S.
F) My opinion on this article is that it may be a warning and nerve racking for toward other countries that Iran might be building nuclear weapons. However on Iran’s side of the story they are just a small little country being bullied by the bigger and stronger countries. So defense Iran feels that it needs to stick its chest out and have some reason for the “big guys” not to mess with the.

II. Summary:
Since the 1990's Japan has imported hundreds tons of rice, much of it coming from the U.S. But only a little of it has been consumed directly. The goverenment now has successfully protected Japenese rice growers. Most of the ignored rice has been stored in rare houses where is either sopils there od later used as animal feed. TO help this global food crisis Japan is thinking of realeasing a large amount of its very own rice stocks to the rest of the world. If they have a bunch of rice just laying around not being aten , why not give it to all the people who really need it. All they need is the U.S. approval to resell it. Firdays meeting will involve the Japenese Ministry of Agriculture, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It will focus on technical details of a potential "rice release," including hoe much rice Japan mught release and how will it be distributed. At the end of this article it states that the U.S. gov't appears ready to alow Japan to move rice out of storage and out it up for sale on the market.
III. Reactions
A) The best theme that this article would match up with is interaction and impact among socieites. Japan really wants to help out other people in the world to help and stop the global food crisis. They are willing to release a million tons of rice or even more. And the good thing is taht if this does follow through the apperance of the new supply of rice could lower the global rice prices.
B)In 1995, Japan imported slightly less than 400,000 tons of rice. By the first part of this decade, that number had climbed to about 700,000 tons annually. Thsi just goes to show that Japan has been helping out for a while now but then has slowed down but now is picking it back up and trying to help out as much as they can.
C) The point of view of this article is an male, outsider.
D) There is no impact on how the article was written since is was not written by an insider there is not bias information given out in this article. He is just explaining on both sides of the situation.
E) I would like to hear from Japan themselves. In the article it stated some thing that Asia said and Japan said but a while ago in 1995 not recently. I would like to hear their voice on how they feel giving all the rice away to the rest of the world. I would also like to hear from the government and while it has taken them a while to say yes to this, its not like they are doing anything wrong.
F) I feel that what Japan is doing is a really great thing. They are selfless people who just want to help stop this food crisis. I am happy that the U.S. is putting their rice up on the market i think this shows a lot of teamwork between two different parts of the world.

In South Africa, many foreigners have come to the country in search of a better life or to escape hardship in their own countries. The Department of Home affairs has not helped these people make the transition, treating the immigrants poorly. In addition, the newcomers joining society has not sit well with the xenophobic citizens who have had many violent clashes with the “Amakwerekwere”, a derogatory term used for the them.. The locals claim that these foreigners, many of which are illegal immigrants, have taken their jobs and made life impossible.
A) The AP World History theme that relates to this article is the “Impact of interaction among and within major societies” because the South Africans are forced to live with immigrants from countries in crisis.
B) Since 1994, millions of foreigners have fled their countries because of economic and political affliction in hopes of a better life in South Africa. Hatred erupted in Johannesburg in 1997 when clashes between local street traders and foreign traders arose. Ever since, South Africans have violently abused these immigrants on the streets.
C) The article’s point of view is that of a South African female working for CNN News, making her an insider.
D) Based on word choice and tone, it seems as though Dempster believes that South African’s “ordinary citizens” should not have to live with foreigners from countries in crisis. This is not surprising as she is from South Africa, making her very biased.
E) The point of view missing from this article is that of an official from the Department of Home Affairs. Whether an official from the department believes that the illegal immigrants have been treated poorly is extremely important.
F) I believe this an issue that needs to be addressed immediately. The ill-treatment of detainees, violent attacks on foreigners, and overall xenophobic attitude of South Africans must end. Although South Africa has been put into a tough situation, the country must find away to bring peace between locals and foreigners.

Republic of Korea ready to further develop its friendly ties with China
http://english.people.com.cn/90001/90780/91342/6419211.html
Summary:
This article is about is about how the president of the Republic of Korea (ROK), President Lee Myung-bak, will make a visit to one of its close neighbors, China. This trip will last 4 days where he will perform interviews and hopefully develop Korea's friendly relations with China. He hopes that this will bring the people of East Asia together.
Reactions:
- How does this relate to one of the AP World History themes? This article relates to the theme Impact of interaction among and within major societies. This is because the Republic of Korea is interacting with the government and the people of China. He is trying to keep Chinese-Korean relations good.
- Evaluate the Historical background of this issue. Just around 16 years ago both these countries engaged in 'Sino-ROK diplomatic ties'. These two have been trading for many years now and have exported/imported over 140 billion US dollars worth of goods.
- Identify the point of view in this article. The author of this article is an insider to the topic since it is going on in China and it is a Chinese newspaper. The writer is probably of Chinese ethnicity. The author is People's Daily Online.
- This article must be approached with some caution since it was written by someone who may be easily corrupted by the government. Their ideas and viewpoints may not be completely their own.
- What point of view is missing from this article? I would like to hear from a representative of the Korean standpoint. This could help us figure out if there is any other reason that the Koreans are trying to keep relations with China.
- I think that it is very good that relations between these two societies are being keep in good form. The more countries that get along the smoother I think that the world could run.

Recently, a heated topic of discussion by the U.S. senate has been what to do about the anti U.S. behavior in Iran. General David Petraeus was vigorously questioned on this past Thursday as if we were preparing for another war in the Middle East with Iran. One of the asked questions to him was whether or not our President, George Bush, was secretly planning an attack on the nation behind closed doors. His weariness on this situation seems to be based on the fact that Iran has been researching and building what seem to be nuclear weapons for a long time and, with their obvious hatred for America, this could become a dangerous situation for us. A former senior intelligence officer said that he thinks that after the election takes place it may be too late for the U.S. to take action on the nuclear amenities of Iran and to just do it now and get that weight of a possible nuclear war off of our backs. This is being held back for multiple reasons including the fact that President Bush has the interests of the anti-warfare society in America in mind. He also has to consider how this may affect the safety of our country in the future. No decision is predicted to be made in the near future but, something will have to be done soon to keep our country safe.

a. This article relates to the AP world history theme impact of interaction among and within major societies because the United States and Iran are both obviously major and important places and Earth and the fact that they are conflicting because of one another’s way of life, makes it an important impact in world history.
b. Iran has been known to not like the country of America and now that they have admitted to trying to develop nuclear “objects” the U.S. government is very suspicious and debating on how to deal with this clear threat as safely as possible.
c. Massimo Calabresi is the author of this article. He is American, obviously male and an insider because he spoke directly to members of the Senate and got his information from primary sources.
d. The author did a good job not letting his point of view show through in his writing, but I do think that it may have shown slightly when he mentions how Condoleezza Rice and Robert Gates tried to “cool” the situation which might show how he thinks they should go to war and that there may be something secret going on in the government that they don’t want the public to know about.
e. The point of view that is missing from this article, although it would be hard to gain, is one of an Iranian leader. His opinion would help me better understand this article because it would give me a better idea of what Iran’s intentions with the nuclear power are and if it really needs to be a concern for us in America.
f. I believe that we need to take action immediately, if at all possible, and try to take out the plants attempting to make this nuclear energy before they have enough to try to bomb us. We have to keep the safety of Americans in consideration no matter what path we take, but, personally I believe that we must attack now rather than later when the could really do a lot of damage on us.
