II. Summary

The United States and Bush have been tossing up the subject of whether to stay in the Middle East and fight it to the end, or withdraw all the troops and hide our face from the rest of the world from defeat. General Petraeus’ opinion was an opinion that families of the troops in Iraq would not want to here. The General believes that the troops should stay in the Middle East until the end. He also said we should not withdraw any after July. One thing effecting this decision is the 2008 presidential election. This is because with a win from the Democrats the troops will be out in no time. However with a win form the Republicans the troops might stay there “for the next 100 years,” a statement made by Republican candidate McCain.

III. Reflection

A) The AP theme this article relates to is Impact of interaction among and within major societies because the Untied States are deciding is they feel they should stay in the Middle East and continue the War on Terror, or withdraw.

B) The United States and the Middle East had their problems recently back to after the cold war. This is because the before the USSR fell they spread their ideas throughout the Middle East, this lead to future problems and friction with the Middle East. This helped lead up to the point of Project Desert Strom and now Iraqi freedom or the War on Terror. One of reason for the conflict is because of the massive amount of oil in the Middle East, another is because the Middle Eastern people look down upon the American culture in disguised with our celebrity gossip and obeisance trends.

C) The point of view of the article is The point of view of the article is not shown in the article but one this is that the author might be British as this is a British newspaper, therefore he/she is an insider.

D) In this article there are numerous indications of bias. At one point of the article the author calling the United States “despoiled.” This means that the United States is some sort of robber. Also the author says how “Bush had hailed.” So it is like he is an emperor or king, meanwhile he was elected by the U.S.A citizens.

E) The point of view missing from the article is from the perspective of President Bush because he could gives some key information of the war and help making the decision. Also from a U.S.A soldier because he/she could say what really is going on in Iraq right on the battle field.

F) My reaction to this article is that there are positives and negatives to both choices. If we retreat we would not be able to call ourselves the power of the world if we got beat by people who never operated a gun before and have no military experience. But if we do not withdraw we will lose many more lives.

This was a pretty interesting article. While I do feel that the author was being a bit unfair towards the President that we citizens have chosen ourselves, I also think that the US is a bit "despoiled", but not as strongly. I can't help but feel that our so-called "War on Terror" is more of a power struggle for the natural oil supplies in Iraq, and that while some people are being saved in the process, that that's not really the big picture. Plus, the people in the Middle East have a right to be disgusted by our culture; have you SEEN what happened with Brittany Spears? Just because they have different views than us does not give us an excuse to start a war with them. Especially if it will take us "100 years" for us to realize our errors.
