"UN investigator says Hariri was killed by criminal network"

  1. "UN investigator says Hariri was killed by criminal network"- Jerulsalem Post, 3/28/08 http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1206632357720&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull
  2. Summary - This article is about a Lebanese Prime Minister who was assasinated by members of a criminal network. Those criminals have now been linked to a group that has previously been behind terrorist attacks in Lebenon. Four Lebanese generals have been connected with the murder and have been in custody for almost two years. It was a suicide bomber that killed the Prime Minister and they have recently been working hard to try and identify who that bomber was. They have been trying to diffuse the situation by giving information about how they have narrowed down the countries the bomber may have come from.
  3. Reactions -

A) This article relates to the AP World history theme " Impact of interaction among and within major societies". The Lebanese terrorist group that has been linked with this assasination did it because they did not like that way that the Prime Minister ran the country. They interacted with the Prime Minister through a suicide bomber, killing him.

B) Rafik Hariri was the Prime Minister of Lebenon. He accumulated most of his fortune (about 16.7 billion) from being an oil tycoon back in the 70's. The people who were said to be his attackers were pro-syria and had a grudge against the Prime Minister. His assasination led to the Cedars Revolution and the withdrawl of Syrian troops from Lebonon.

C) The point of view in this article is 'The associated press'. But it was printed in a Jewish newspaper and the writers are outsiders to problems in Lebenon.

D) This article was written in a Jewish newpaper. In Jerusalem they don't like syrians because they are always fighting over land. Their opinons on what happened may have been skewed because of their personal experiences.

E) They point of view of someone who saw the actual assasination is missing. They could have given an eyewitness accout of the events that really happened that day and their view on who they think might have done this to the Prime Minister.

F) This article makes me think that we aren't safe. Mr. Hariri was just driving through the country he was the leader of and his life just ended. It makes you think if there are people there who could do this then no one is really ever safe.
