'Hamas has built up a force of 20,000'

I. Citation:
‘Hamas has built up a force of 20,000.’ The Jerusalem Post. April 10, 2008. http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1207649983041&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull

II. Summary:

Israeli forces have been notified by Israeli think tank that the Hamas have built up a force of 20,000. These 20,000 men have been trained in Iran and Lebanon. Information was gathered about the commanders of the brigades and the weaponry they have acquired. One of the main brigades responsible for most of the terrorist attacks would be Izzedin al-Kassam. The Hamas do not only have 20,000 men, they also have other forces such as Executive forces and operatives that would help out during an attack from the Israeli’s. The Hamas would not fight the Israeli’s out in wide-open fields, but in over populated areas with many women and children. Ultimately ever since the disengagement the Hamas have been building their army up and it will not stop for a couple of years.

III. Reaction:

A) The AP World History theme this article relates to is Development and interaction of cultures because the Hamas are developing their army into a bigger and more reliable one for many reasons.
B) The Israeli’s and the Hamas have been back and forth fighting since the year 2005 and the fighting hasn’t slowed up one bit. Both groups dislike each other and don’t seem to be trying to work out their differences in ways other than fighting.
C) This article was written by a male, Israeli which would most likely make him and insider.
D) This article was written by an Israeli therefore we might want to approach this document with caution because the author could be exaggerating the building up of the Hamas army. The Shin Bet is also an Israeli Security Agency and might exaggerate the truth they found out about the Hamas.
E) I would like to hear from a commander of one of these brigades to hear why they are they are bulking up their forces. They might just be taking precautions.
F) To fully understand this article I would like to have heard from a commander of one of the brigades but from what I read I think the Israeli’s need to calm down. I think the Hamas are taking precautions, so if they need to defend themselves against an attack they will be prepared. I also think they Israeli’s should be bulking up their army as well.

i cant believe they would fight in the over populated areas. thats very cruel to do because many people probably could get out of the area in time to escape all of the fighting. lots of people were probably caught in the cross fire.

I agree with you that the Israeli's do need to calm down and think about the consequences of what their actions will be. However, I don't think it would be smart to bulk up their army because that would encourage a war. Instead, they should work towards peace and an agreement.
