II. Summary
This article is about the troubles associated with the upcoming elections in Nepal. This election is very important, as the 601 people chosen will rewrite the country’s constitution and govern the country until a definite leader is chosen. However, much tension is created from these elections. Opposing groups have planned attacks on each other, and between three separate incidents, a total of eight people have been killed so far. People who are running for office are taken aback because of the violence. One politician says that he “regret[s] the degree of violence there have been in some districts and urge[s] as peaceful an election day as possible.” One can only hope that it will be peaceful for this will be the first election since King Gyanendra died two years ago.
III. Reflection
Ø This article relates to the AP World Theme of “changes in functions and structures of states” because the government of Nepal is trying to be organized for the first time in two years.
Ø This issue has been going on for many years, but never so much over political power. The two feuding groups have always been enemies and induced violence, but never before had it been over politics.
Ø This article was written by a woman who is not from Nepal. She appears to have no favor of either side in this issue.
Ø She doesn’t appear to favor either side, but she does seem to want change in Nepal. She also appears to want an end to the violence.
Ø In order to more fully understand the issue, I would want to hear from a candidate from both of the warring parties. This would allow people to hear the motives of both groups to see who is really “right” in this issue.
Ø I think that this election is necessary, but if it results in so much violence, there needs to be tighter security at all political functions.

I agree with Matt that the election is important. If there is this much violence occurring, political orginization needs to occur. As much as security needs to be tightened, i think if other countries interfere, it will only make things worse. It's a shame that politicians that want to improve the status of their country have to fear the constant threat of attack.
Although the election will bring about many good things, like an organized government, it is also bringing about many negative things like fighting and death. I agree with Ken on the fact that there should be security reforms, and they should control the citizens of there nation. Hopefully once the election rolls around, the violence will end and peace will be established.
I think the elections are a good thing no matter the cost becase if there is no election the death will continue and get even worse. I think a seperate force has to oversee the elections to stop the attacks. This would be good in ordr to create a safe and fair election. A sucsessful election would be a great success for Nepal.
