Gaza bakers forced to lower prices

I. Gaza bakers strike over Hamas regulations

March 28, 2008

Gaza Life

II. In Gaza, the people have been having shortages of food and the people are hungry. The bakers of Gaza have been selling their bread for high prices. The militant Islamic Hamas have forced the bakers to lower the price of their breads. The Israelis do not care for the Hamas because they overran their government in 2006. The people of Gaza are buying bread for $2.30, while in West Bank they are buying bread for as high as $4.20. The bakers are having trouble breaking even, and they may even shut down their bakeries. If this happens, it will be a disaster for the people of Gaza, considering how they are currently in a food shortage right now.

III. A) This article can relate to the AP World History theme impact of technology, economics, and demography on people and the environment because the economy of Gaza is not doing well because of food shortages. Because of the economy, it is forcing bakers to go out of business.

B) The historical background of this issue is that the Islamic Palestinian Hamas are a terrorist group (according to some nations) and have taken over the Gaza Strip, because Palestinians do not like Israel. They used brute force when taking over and the people of Gaza do not like the Hamas.

C) This point of view of this article is that of a person from Gaza. She is an insider.

D) This article may be have bias in it because it is written from a person in

Gaza and may be in favor of the bakers in Gaza since the Hamas are not liked in Gaza. One indication of bias in this article is that the author uses the word “militant”, meaning vigorously and aggressive person. Because the author wrote this, it may mean that she does not like the Hamas, and may over exaggerate their faults.

E) I would like to hear from a person who lives in Gaza to gain the full story. They would give me the full story because it would tell me how bad the Hamas were treating the bakers.

F) I think that the bakers are right in this story. I do no think that the Hamas are right because they took over this land and they should make sure that the people of their land have food without causing people who are working hard to make a living to lower the prices of their products so much to the point where they are looking at bankruptcy.

This is a very interesting topic. Although I find it suprising to be interested in bread... If this nation relies on bread as much as you say then this is a very large crisis for such a small nation.
