Dalai Lama is Spewing Lies

I. Dalai Lama is Spewing Lies. China Daily, April 30, 2008 http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2008-04/30/content_6655137.htm

II. At a meeting in New York City few days ago, the Dalai Lama has allegedly lied to the public. He had said that the Chinese should stop oppressing the Tibetans, and that some were in hiding from the Chinese. The Chinese were angry and said that it was a lie and denied it. Later on, the Chinese caught him in another “lie” that he fully supported the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he had said a more negative comment about it in the past. They do not know how the Dalai Lama is a symbol of hope in peace when he is causing so much chaos.

III.

A. The AP World History theme this document most relates to is Changes in functions and structures of states and in attitudes toward states and political
identities, including the emergence of the nation-state. In this case, the Chinese have seemingly oppressed the Tibetans, who are trying to emerge as their own nation. This caused the Chinese to become very angry at them, oppress and almost torture the people. Their attitudes and respect for them has diminished and this caused other nations (such as he U.S.) and individuals (Example, Dalai Lama) to have a changed attitude toward china.

B. Tibet has always been under Chinese rule, and they desperately want to make them selves their own nation. China has decided they will not let this happen. Despite the protests and petition, China has not seemed to budge. However, on March 14th, 2008, things took a turn for the worse. China had arrested a group of terrorist plotting Tibetans, which put all the Tibetans under oppression to a point where some refer to it as genocide. Lately, other countries have become angered and protested the Olympics, a symbol of peace to occur in a land with such turmoil.

C. The author of this article is Chinese, which is all we know.

D. There is a lot of found bias in this article. The author is enraged at the Dalai Lama because he has criticized the Chinese government for their cruel actions. Since the author is Chinese, he/she takes it personally and for all the unconfirmed reports and actions the Dalai Lama has accused china of, he has slandered the Lama. He says that he is “Spewing Lies”, “Pointing Fingers,” “Sabotaging the Olympic Games,” and “White Elephant accusations” The author even as far as to say that the Dalai Lama is not a symbol of peace and harmony but destroying the world as we know it.

E. While we have opinions from both the Dalai Lama and China, I would like to hear from a Tibetan civilian because they can confirm the treatment they are receiving and can confirm whether the Dalai Lama was indeed lying about China’s actions or if the oppression is occurring in that manner.

F. Overall, I am shocked and angered at the author of this article. I think that the poor treatment of the Tibetans is really occurring and the Dalai Lama is just trying to help. I don’t believe the Chinese are really evil at heart, for all governments and countries have had an instance where they oppressed a race. However, if a person, especially a peace loving person such as the Dalai Lama tried to help, China should acknowledge the mistakes they made. Therefore it angered me so the slander such a prominent person in society that could make a difference in this world. The author should really consider what he was saying and in my opinion apologize for his behavior. I think that if he can voice his opinion, then it should not be a problem for the Dalai Lama to voice his.

Hey taylor,

Quite an interesting article you have chosen. I honestly love articles about the chinese and tibetans, and have done a few in the past. I do feel that the Dalai Lama should watch what he says to the public, since he does have a major influence on the people who look up to him. But like you said I think the Dalai Lama is trying to help, and I still think he is trying to keep the peace. I understand where the author is coming from and why he is angry, but this article cleary targets the Dalai Lama, which I do not feel is right. Good job.

hey Taylor =)

I agree with you that this article is very bias and overexaggerates the comments made by the Dalai Lama. However, even though the author overly expresses his own opinions, there are still some facts in this article, and it is true that the Dalai Lama has said things that contradict what he said before, like the comment about the Beijing Olympics. I think that the Tibetan riot is just a really big mess, and it is not right for them to do it at a time as important as the Olympics just to get international attention. Many people put a lot of effort into the 2008 Olympics, and it's not right for them to try to ruin it.
