Bush seeks $200m in funding for PA

Max Frizalone
Ariticle here

1. Summary
This aritcle discusses President Bush's newwest addition to the 2009 budget which covers funding for the Palestinian Authority. President Bush's budget is 200 million dollars, 50 Million for proper training and equipping of the Palestinian Authority solders, and 150 Million for "urgent budget support". What this urgent budget support is, is not explained in the article. This 200 million is more added to the 100 million already requested for the 2009 budget, meaning the US would have to spend 300 million dollars. The 100 million already in the budget is going towards health care, and education, and to spur economic growth. The US has held back in giving money to the Palestinian Authority because the are afraid that the money might end up in the wrong hands, and possibly into terrorist funding or lose its way and end up in the hands of a corrupt politician. President bush hopes that this money will encourage peace talks between Palestine and Israel. The article states that
President Bush plans to continue support for Israel. He plans on paying them 2.25 billion dollars this year. This is part of a 30 billion dollar support plan which the US has supported Israel with.

2. Reactions

A. this article relates to the AP world history theme of "Development and interactions of cultures" because Palestine is a developing country, and isn't interacting with its Israeli neighbors well.

B. This issue relates back to President Bush's most recent budget proposal of 3.1 Trillion dollars. This is the biggest budget in history, and doesn't include much more than the last, but is so much bigger because of all the money we are putting into our army. President Bush has created the biggest deficit of over 410 billion dollars, the biggest ever. Last years Deficit was a mere 167 billion, which is barley a 1/3 of this years. With our economy falling, and gas prices rising this spending is a bit drastic. President Bush believes that his budget plan would have America back to a stable budget by 2012.

C. This article is written by an Israeli Women writer. She is a J Post correspondent. She is an outsider on the issue.

D. There are few indications of Point of View except in the following passage "
The move came as the United States had indicated it is willing to consider providing more money to the Palestinians and as it berates other countries, particularly Arab states, for not giving enough or fulfilling their previous commitments." In this statement she criticizes the US government for not fulfilling their previous commitments with no proof.

E. the article is all about President Bush's budget, but he is not once quoted or spoken to at all. I feel his voice is missing, and perhaps he could have shed some light on to why he is spending so much money.

F. This article didn't come to shock me at first, since I understand how much war costs, and that sacrifices must be made in order to help others. But it wasn't until I looked up the history of this issues and found that President bush is planning on spending 3.1 Trillion dollars this year. I think that we need to stop playing world police and deal with our own countries problems before others.

I agree with Max on this. I think that we need to stop acting like all this war is fighting is bringing us good. I understand that if we retreat now then bigger problems will surface but this is just ridiculous now. I am not blaming bush for all of this however, he has not made many wise choices since he has become our president a couple of years ago. We need to stop wasting money, suppplies and men and women's lives for things that are lost causes.
