AFTER 60 YEARS, ARABS IN ISRAEL ARE OUTSIDERS
II. In Jerusalem, Arabs are no longer wanted or welcome. On Thursday May 8, 2008, Israel will be celebrating their independence day. They will be 60 years old. The Jewish people are still making the Arabs feel uncomfortable and feel unwanted. The Jewish population is saying that they feel proud of their religion and feel that is why they love to live there. The Arab population is 1.3 million and they will not be celebrating this Thursday. “I am not a Jew”. “How can I belong to a Jewish state? If they define this as a Jewish state, they deny that I am here.” An Arab radio broadcaster said this. Obviously, the Arabs are upset. It was said that the Jewish population is afraid of losing a demographic battle to the Arabs because their population is growing. When they say demographic battle they mean a social battle, or a population battle. There is also a dispute over the land nearby. All of the Arab citizens in Israel live in old parts of the country. They live in small tightly packed villages. Meanwhile, there are open villages and towns nearby that they are not permitted to use, in case of the expanding of the Jewish community.
III. Reactions:
A) This relates to the AP World history theme of Interaction Within and Among different societies. This goes along perfect because of the interaction and fighting that is going on between the Arabs and the Jewish. The way that these two cities act with each other is surprising because they are all part of the same country, just different descents and religions.
B) The history in this issue is when the country was being formed 60 years ago. The fighting of the land had been occurring even before the country was made a country. There had been arguments over it long ago and this was one of the reasons it was created.
C) There is no specific writer of this article, however it seems to me that it was an American writing it because they do not say we. If they were talking as an insider they would use words like I and we. They also speak of both societies as they.
D) When I read this article it sounded like the author was a little bias towards the side of the Arabs. He made it seem like the Arabs were completely innocent and the Jewish people are the ones being very mean and treating the Arabs like they don’t belong there.
E) I think it would be very useful and helpful if I heard something from Jewish person because I heard from Arabs about how they were being treated but not from anyone who was Jewish.
F) I was shocked at this article and how discriminative they Jewish population was and at the way they are treating the Arabs. This shows how all over the world, no matter where you go, even in the United States, people discriminate and are judgmental. I thought it was horrible that these Arabs were part of their country and were still being treated like this. It seems like once you get past discrimination in one area and things get better, it is worse in another area.
