II. Food shortages are causing much concern worldwide. The rising price of food is leaving more and more people hungry than ever before. To help ensure that people would be fed, 750 million dollars need to be raised to support the hungry. Unfortunately, funds needed are not being received and it is causing many unsettled feelings amongst many societies all over the world. Ban Ki-moon, the United Nations secretary is especially trying to enforce the raising of funds for food to avoid, “malnutrition and social unrest on an unprecedented scale.” He hopes to financially support the farms of even the poorest countries so that they will have land sustainable for agriculture. He plans to create a group consisting of heads on the UN and World Bank to try to tackle the problem. President George W. Bush has also voiced some concern about the present food shortages. He says the rise in prices are caused from diverting corn into bio fuels, “weather and increased demand.” He hopes that other sources besides foods and land to create fuels. It will hopefully control the shortages.

a) This article relates mainly to the theme, Impact of technology, economics, and demography on people and the environment. Food used to produce fuels is having an effect on people because of the food sources and are also harming land, which has the potential to be a food producing area.
b) Food shortages have always been an issue because there are always countries in the world suffering from poverty. It is good now that action is being taken to try to ensure that everyone in the world is fed, no matter how poor.
c) While the author of the article is unknown, this is truly a worldwide issue so any author could be considered an insider.
d) Being a part of the United Nations, General Ban Ki-moon (who is quoted much throughout the article), will be most likely to work on issues affecting the world as a whole. His job is to work with other countries and benefit them as a whole.
e) I would like to hear from a poor person who is struggling to feed themselves and their families due to food shortages. I would like to know their thoughts on the plans for the future and how they feel the UN has done on feeding them in the past.
f) I think it is good that Ban Ki-moon is taking action to end food shortages. It is also good that the climate is being considered while the food revelation is occurring. They are trying to ensure that land and food aren’t being used to make fuels, which will help the environment as well as the poor who are currently starving from the shortages.
