II. Summary
Al-Masri was a leader of the Al-Qaeda group. US forces say that he has died from natural causes-most likely Hepatitis. It is believed that he had died within the past two months. More importantly, in the past, Masri had escaped two attempts of assassination within the last year. His death marks off an essential part of the terrorist group, Al-Qaeda.
III. Reactions
A) This article applies to the AP World History theme the impact of interaction among and within major societies. This is because the Al-Qaeda is a violent terrorist group that caused many problems for the society in the US in 2001.
B) The Al-Qadea is a violent terrorist organization. They are working to end any sort of foreign influence in Muslim countries, as well as create a new Islamic Caliphate. However, in doing so, methods often include suicide attacks and random bombings, harming many innocent individuals. Abu Obaidah al-Masri was known as the senior planner of Al-Qaeda attacks on the US and UK. It is also believed that he had been training young Muslims in Pakistan.
C) The point of view of this article is a British reporter from the UK. They are an inside source.
D) The issue being reported may be influenced by the author’s point of view because the author is from the UK, making him, or her, an inside source. The line, "only to say later that he had not been in the village at the time," shows partial bias in the way it is stated. The line is somewhat skewed to make it seem as if whomever attempted the missile strike was somewhat foolish.
E) The point of view of a Muslim citizen would have helped me to better grasp the issue stated. With the Muslim’s insight, I may have learned more information on the details of Al-Masri’s death. Much of those details are left unknown to the reader of this article.
F) I think it’s terrible that Al-Masri was taking young Muslims and training them. At their age, it could almost be seen as kidnapping. The children that he took were most likely much too young to make their own logical decisions. Also, I wonder why his death is left so mysterious and no specific date was given as to when or how he died. His death, however, marked off an essential part of the Al-Qaeda terrorist organization, possibly making the group weaker.
