BCC NEWS: Russia ignores West’s Iran Fears
Date published: December 17, 2008
Date chosen: April 27, 2008

2. Summary

This article focuses on how Russia is not concerned, or is ignoring the Western country’s fears of Iran’s plans for a nuclear energy and bomb(s). The article explains how the West, with countries such as the United States, England, and France believe that Iran has intentions that could threaten the world and life on the planet by making and developing a nuclear bomb. The West knowing that Iran is a “radical” country is influencing their views. Russia on the other hand, feels that Iran does not have intentions of threatening the lives of innocent people. Currently Russia has decided that there is no longer a political reason to hold up the delivery of their fuel, and is planning on giving Iran supplies for the making of the bomb on their newly built enrichment plant. In addition Russia is profiting from their selling to the plant in southern Iran. Iran is said to have told Russian delegates they have no intentions of threatening the west, but they are still feared by the West that if one day Iran enhances their technology on their nuclear plant, they will very well hold the west hostage to a nuclear bomb.

3. Reactions
A)
The AP World History theme that relates to this article is, Impact of technology, economics, and demography on people and the environment. This relates to this article because Iran is constructing an enrichment plant which is designed to create a nuclear bomb. The technology is feared that it will endanger peoples’ lives in the Western countries of the world.
B) The history of this issue is that the problem and conflict has been going on for a long period of time. In the past other countries have planned to construct nuclear bombs, and have created the same concern and uproar about their intentions. The high levels of technology cause a problem because if a country with terrorist intentions obtains this information, the potential for global destruction becomes very real.
C) The point of view of this article is one by a man named Paul Reynolds who is a World Affairs correspondent for the news company. He is most likely a person not living in Russia or Iran due to the view of the article.
D) This article may show some bias of point of view that may be impacting how the issue is being reported by the author who is favor of protecting the Western countries interests. It is written in a negative attitude towards Russia and Iran. An example from the article is: “It appears that Russia is unconcerned about Western fears over Iran. The implication is that it will not easily agree to an increase in UN sanctions on Iran.”
E) The point of view missing from this article is one of a, person living in Iran and believing in the positive effects on the nation’s energy that a nuclear plant would have. It would be helpful to hear from him/her because in the article there’s no indication of Iran’s point of view of the Issue and their plans for the plant that could eventually lead to a nuclear bomb and international issues.
F) My reaction and insight to this article, is that I agree with the Western countries feelings and beliefs about the issue. I feel that Russia is not thinking clearly through the consequences of a nuclear bomb being developed in Iran and the problems it could have on other countries. If a nuclear bomb was created and set off, the lives of thousands and thousands of people would be killed. It would have a negative effect on Russia, because they contributed the supplies to the building of the plant and the bomb that would have killed people all around the world. I think that the idea of Russia supporting Iran and ignoring the Western views is a bad and divisive course of action.
