BBC NEWS: Women Face Bias Worldwide- UN
Date published: April 5, 2008
Date chosen: April 10, 2008
2. Summary
This article focuses on how women are discriminated against in almost every country around the world. 70% of the world's poor consist of women and they own just 1% of the world's titled land. There are laws discriminating women such as statutes on divorce, maternity benefits and pensions. Even specific basic laws including the legal ages for marriage are not in action. These could have a huge impact on women's lives. Many states and countries still have different ages of marriage for young women than they have for young men, in addition the age for girls is always lower than the age for boys. This in turn leads to violations for instance, the females’ right to education, if she has to leave school at a young age to get married; this impacts her life chances of living. It results in being a life-long violation of her rights, and privileges in stipulations of forfeiting education, having children too early, and possibly damaging herself. An introduction of a new, separate mechanism to fight discrimination is being recommended because the existing UN and international human rights laws are not being upheld. It also advocates for a new UN expert to focus specifically on laws which damage women's chances in life.
3. Reactions
A) The AP World History theme that relates to this article is Systems of social structure and Gender structure. This relates to this article because women in almost every country around the world are being discriminated against. The Women are not getting the same equal privileges as men. In general you can conclude most of the countries with the problem are partially patriarchal. The men get more advantages and rights and are favored more in society over women.
B) The history of this issue is that this problem and conflict has been going on from the beginning of history. Men were always dominant over women. Although today, women have many more rights than the past, the problem is still a big issue. Not everybody is equal, and it should be.
C) The point of view of this article is most likely (author not listed) one of that a women who is defending women’s rights in the world.
D) This article may show some bias or point of view that may be impacting how the issue is being reported, by the author being in favor of the women’s side of the issue. It is written in the women’s view of the problem.
E) The point of view missing from the article is one of, an outsider or male. If would be helpful to hear from him/her because he/she is not being affected by the discrimination on the women. It would be helpful to see if the person agrees of disagrees with the conflict and if they think women should have equal rights as men.
F) My reaction and insight to this article, is that I agree with it because I believe everyone should be treated equal and not be discriminated against. We should all have equal privileges and shouldn’t put our lives in danger because the laws say because you’re a certain, race, or gender.

Almost all the civilizations we are learning from in AP World History were patriarchal. What I did not know is that patriarchal aspects are used in many countries throughout the world today. I went to the article and learned that many girls in foreign countries have to marry at the age of 14. This would impact their life completly. I agree with Lyndsay that it isnt fair that women are being discriminated so much.
I think this was a very good article choice and I would highly recommend that more girls read it. Being a girl, I have always understood to some degree that men have been favored over women all throughout history, and even somewhat now, but I never realized what a huge problem it was. I was especially shocked when I read that women held only one percent of land holdings throughout the world. I think it is important for girls to recognize this issue, because wile we may not feel it affecting us now (here, in school), it definitely could when we get older and do things such as get a job. All girls need to realize what their rights are and stand up for them, for their is no good reason why women shouldn't be considered equal to men.
