Violence against Pakistani Women
M Ilyas Khan
4/15/08
II. Summary:
This article sums up the violence, discrimination, and death counts in Pakistan. This article is mainly based on the discrimination and violence against women. It says that violence against women more than doubled from last year. It also says that the reason for this increased discrimination and inequality between the sexes is because of social practices and religious extremism. It also said that more suicide attacks happened than in all previous years. This is because of people killing themselves in hopes of killing troops as well, such as in a suicide bombing. Women are being killed for honor along with other reasons. Politically their rights are being taken away, as well as socially. Also the bombing of girl’s schools decreases the enrollment of girls in schools. This article was written about a survey taken by the human rights organization.
A) How does this article relate to one of the AP World History themes?
This article deals with the development and transformation of social structures. This is because of the conflicts between women and men and the subordination of men.
This also relates to the effects of religion on people. And how people interpret religious teachings and practices.
B) Evaluate the historical background of the issue (i.e. explain the history of the issue) In the Middle East we are aware of the violence and war violence going on there because that is where our troops are stationed. And some of their warfare tactics are suicide bombings. Also the subordination has always been evident in societies.
C) Identify the point of view of the article – who is writing it? (Nationality, gender, insider/outsider?)
There is no specific point of view. There are not many biased remarks by the Pakistani writing this article. This article more states facts then gives opinions.
D) Discuss any indication that the author’s Point of View is impacting how the issue is being reported, i.e. any evidence of bias in favor of or against a party involved in the issue?
There is barely any indication of biased. You could say that the remark for the cause of this violence was because of social practices and religious extremism, but that statement was a statistic made by the human rights organization.
E) What point of view is missing within the article? Who would you want to hear from to gain a full understanding of the issue?
The missing voice that is missing is a person that believes that these killings and acts of violence are for another more specific reason. To hear the opposing argument would help to learn more about the situation.

I think it's a pretty big issue that the rights of women in Pakistan are decreasing rather than becoming better. This is partially influenced by religions but also influenced by the way the society has developed. I don't think anyone can really step in to stop this but some of the values portrayed in the poll are frightening.
Violence against women in Pakistan should not be tolerated. I think it is more because of political reasons than religious. Since Pakistan is a prodominatly Muslim nation, the religion would have nothing to do with it because Islam teaches respect towards women. It seems like society is becoming more and more patriarchal.
