UN's Annan wants US, Europe to consider force in Darfur

The World Revolution
January 16, 2006
Summary: The UN is currently trying to get the arguements in Darfur to come to an end. To do this though they need to complete two tasks. First, they need to get countries like the US to help stop the fighting. This will probably not be very difficult do to these country's loyalty to the UN. The more difficult task will most likely be getting permission to take over the operation from groups already involved in the conflict. They have basically already dealt with the Sudan government and the Security Council in different meetings, and will gain permission from the AU after they run out of funds to continue the operation. Once the UN completes these tasks, it will be ready to take Darfur fighting into its own hands.
Reactions:
A) This relates to the AP World history theme of impact of interaction among and within major societies because it shows how the UN must cooperate with nations in order to complete tasks. It must deal with the rich countries in order to stop fighting in Darfur, and it must gain permission to stop fighting in Darfur from groups already fighting there. Due to its interactions, the UN will complete these tasks.
B) This issue started when rebel occured in the Darfur area in 2003, and the leaders around that region tried to put it down with a harsh campaign that killed many people. That continued for huge periods of time, and organizations like the Sudan government and AU came in, trying to solve the conflict. With limited success, the UN has been forced to step into this conflict that has even been reffered to as a genocide.
C) The author of the article is Evelyn Leopold, who is probably a US female citizen and is an insider due to US involvement with the UN.
D) The author's point of view may be impacting the article because the US belives the UN should hold the responsibilty of dealing with this conflict, so the article describes what the current groups fighting in Darfur are doing wrong, such as their lack of funds.
E) To get a full understanding of the topic, I would like to hear from a Sudan government official, who would be able to explain information about what has been happening with the conflicts, and what the Sudan government has done to try and resolve the conflict.
F) I believe the resolving of the Darfur conflict will be done much faster under the command of the UN, rather than the individual groups because the UN has more resources, it has more influence when dealing with other nations, and will try to come up with the most peaceful solution, instead of using very violent and destructive means. This leads me to believe that this conflict that has been going on for a long period of time may end shortly, if the UN can get all to cooperate.
