2. Summary
Eight men in London were charged because they were accused of planning an attack on trans-Atlantic Airlines. According to the author, they said they were doing it "in the name of Islam". The explosives they were going to use were composed of household liquids and a deadly cocktail, along with hydrogen peroxide and other organic chemicals, which were disguised as soft drinks while being smuggled onto planes.
These accused men were going to bomb seven airlines, all going to the United States and Canada. This trial is one of the biggest terror prosecutions ever in Britain, and the men were charged with conspiracy to murder.

a) This article would relate to the AP World Theme, "Impact of technology, economics, and demography on people and the environment." Bombs and explosives are technology, and it is impacting the environment and people in a negative way. The explosives kill people and cause destruction.
b) Since this is a recent event, there is no historical background of this issue. Conflicts between religions and countries may be a cause of this, but there is no history of this specific article.
c) The point of view is coming from Alan Cowell. He is male, British, and is a journalist. He is also a correspondent in the London bureau of The New York Times.
d) In the article, the author keeps mentioning how this accused men are doing it "in the name of Islam". He may be hinting that Islam is a terrorism religion, which is not true because it is a religion of peace. Obviously, he is going to be on the side opposing the accused men because the accused men were going to plan a suicide attack.
e) I would like to have heard from one of the accused men. The only quote from them that was mentioned in the article was "in the name of Islam." I would have like to have known the reason for doing this, and because they know the most about their religion, unlike an ignorant person who says negative things about Islam.
f) I think that it was great that these men were caught because if they weren't, seven planes would have been bombed and many people would have been killed. If there was any historical evidence on the issue, the author should have included it in the article. These men that were accused were making Islam look like a bad religion, and what they were going to do is forbidden in Islam.

Hey yasemin!
I thought this article was interesting, becuase although Islam is a very peaceful religion it is associated with terrorism and violence. It's terrible that they attempted a suicide bombing "for Islam." Islam is a non-violent religion, and I dont know why someone would kill themselves and other people for a relgion that doesn't call for it. Although, since I am not Muslim, it's hard for me to say, but why harm people for the sake of your religion? Terrorism and bombing is an extreme generalization in this religion, and many people equate Muslims with these kind of attacks. It's racist to think that all Muslims are evil and are terrorists, becuase that's not the way it is, but unfortuanatly we live in a world were such hatred exists.
I'm thankful that the eight men were caught so that the people on the plane were okay.
