Summary:
This article talks about the problems over in Haiti ports because of what is called "government red tape". This is the process that they must go through in order to give out the food. They have to get paper work signed in order to give out the food and have people sign them. This is a shame because there are people starving and the food that they need is there, they just aren't able to give it to them. These are additions added to their bureaucracy. These additions have been made to help the corrupt government they had before. The article says that the food is rotting away in the ports, an example is how a garbage man had a load of food that had insects crawling all over them. However, there are many actions being taken in order to help the people. There are strict lookouts on smugglers. They need these because many smugglers are bringing in drugs such as cocaine. I think that is it good that people are trying help these people in need. Hopefully, the food will be able to given to the people very soon, because as reported in 2002, that almost half the population was undernourished.
A) There are many good interactions between our society and Haiti's society because we have been able to contact their society and we can help their society. However, there are bad interactions in the timing that we have given the food and the time that they can distribute it to the people. Our societies have been able to help, which is great, however their government has not been exactly cooperating. It seems like their government is unorganized, which could be the reason why these people need this food to begin with.
B) The historical background on this article is that the government is corrupt, so the government of Haiti has probably been corrupt for a while. Also, the government probably doesn't care that much for the people, and if they just started to try to make an attempt to help them.
C) This article is written by an American. Therefore, they could be bias towards America. They could think that America is right because of their efforts they are making to help the people. however, they do not know what it is definitely like over there. They are an outsider obviously to Haiti.
D) An example that shows why this article could be bias is how the author is saying how America is trying so hard to get the food there. Meanwhile, he probably isn't even part of the U.N World Food Program. Therefore, he wouldn't really know the struggles and how hard it really was.
E) I think that hearing from someone who is starving in Haiti, and from someone who really needs that food. I think that this would help because all these people trying to help would try something different. I imagine that it is very hard, and hearing from someone with this problem would make them want to help them even more.
F) I was affected greatly by this because I felt horrible when I heard about this because I think it is horrible that people who are making the attempt can't even make the connection to get the people the food that need it. Also, the this is a problem all over the world, that even occurs in our country.
