2. Summary
This article focuses on recent events in Tibet that have spurred outrage from western European countries against China’s attempt to suppress the Tibetan uprising. The main sentiment of this article is focused on the hypocrisy in subjecting that the Beijing Olympics should be boycotted. The author points out that the past boycotts of the Olympics, such as the 1980 Moscow Olympics, had very little effect on the actions of the Soviet Union, and few would consider a boycott of the London Olympics based upon Britain’s recent involvement in Afghanistan. The article continues on by documenting published criticisms of China’s issues around being a global polluter and a drain on the earth’s natural resources, and contrasts that opinion with factual evidence to the contrary. Examples in support of China are clearly stated in the author’s evidence by which he emphasizes China’s development and reuse of natural resources to provide for its energy needs, and China’s attempt to control its population through a national Family planning policy. Both of which demonstrate a clear effort on China’s behalf to be environmentally conscious while maintain the growth of its economy.
3. Reactions
A) The AP World History theme that relates to this article is Cultural, religious, and intellectual developments. This relates to this article because the world is criticizing China’s attempt to suppress Tibet. They are not recognizing the positive things China is doing, such as by trying to control their population, and increase nuclear and hydropower to reduce dependence on polluting coal. China is trying to help the pollution and scarce resource issues while all the other nations are not concentrating on their own countries, but worrying about China.
B) The history of this issue is that this problem and conflict has been going on consistently. Over the years China has been criticized as the great global polluter and user of scarce resources, but in contrast they have done far more than any of the rest to overcome both problems.
C) The point of view of this article is of a Chinese citizen. ( the article does not state the name or the author but is written in the point of view of a Chinese citizen.)
D) This article may show some bias or point of view that may be impacting how the issue is being reported, by the author being in favor of China. He most likely himself is Chinese because he was defending how China is helping the world issues occurring and should not be being criticized for it.
E) The point of view missing from this article is one of, an outsider not living in China. It would be helpful to hear from him/her because he/she is not living in the country and not being affected by China’s issues. According to the article it says outsiders living in different countries criticize China and don’t realize what they are doing to preventing their problems from getting worse. It would be helpful to hear from the outsiders view and see if they agree or disagree about what China is doing about their troubles.
F) My reaction and insight to this article is that I agree with it because the society we are living in right now is being affected by many issues and not many people are realizing that they are getting worse and worse by the day. China on the other hand is trying to do something about the problems occurring in their country which are also occurring around the world. We should overlook that they are the country with the biggest percent of the problems and should be asking our selves, what are they doing to help their issues, and then ask our selves what are we doing to help our problems in our country? Are we much different from theirs?
