II. Summary

An ongoing conflict between Gaza, Egypt and Jerusalem, Israel has left eight students of Mercaz Harav Yeshiva killed as of last week. The Hamas rulers of Gaza refuse to halt gunfire until Israel ceases military operation on the Gaza Strip. Israel has agreed not to retaliate from the terror attack of the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva. A calm has been made in agreement between the two, in that Gaza has also agreed to stop ground/ air attacks as well as any construction of smuggling tunnels along the Gaza-Egypt border.

III. Reaction

a) This article relates to the AP World History theme of changes in structure and functions of states and in attitudes toward states and political identities. This is because the Hamas rulers of Gaza wish to change Israel and the Gaza Strip into an Islamic state. They are using violence to do so.

b) This conflict has been continuing for the past sixty years. The Hamas are a militant Palestinian organization that was founded in 1987. They oppose peace with Israel and often resort to terrorism, as was the case with the bombing of the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva. They are seeking to establish an Islamic state on the Gaza Strip as well as in Israel.

c) The point of view of this article is from a group of Israeli journalists. This makes them insiders because of their close location to the events.

d) The author’s point of view may be skewed in that, the authors themselves are Israeli. This would most likely make them oppose to the Hamas because the Hamas are causing destruction and terrorism within their country.

e) I would have liked to have heard from a witness from the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva who may have experienced the bombing. Their point of view would help me to better grasp the terrible anti-Semitic attacks that took place that day.

f) I think that it is absolutely terrible that any innocent person could be killed because of something that may have had nothing to do with them. It is important that the Hamas be taken care of and are forced to stop any sort of terrorism. However, I am happy to hear that both countries have agreed to come to a temporary calm.

I agree that the killing of innocent people is a horrible thing. The fighting between the Israelis and the Hamas has definatly caused a lot of destruction, and antisematic attacks have never been good. However, the fact that they have made a truce, even if was only temporary, is a step in the right direction, and I'm glad their fighting has ceased for the time being.

I agree with you 100%, I feel this war has gone beyond all moral limits. Many innocent people on both sides of this war are being killed and want nothing to do with it. Both Israel and Palestine are very greedy for this land and the rulers of these countries are acting very childish. They don’t understand that many men, women and children are dying through many attacks aerial or ground attacks. Although, I feel that these countries are getting along better now. Now that Israel has stopped planning ground and aerial attacks, as well as stopping there smuggling canal routes much less conflict will occur. I can’t guarantee that this war will end now, but I can see things getting better for both Israel and Palestine in the near future.
