Citation: title: Hizbollah "Targeting Israeli Ministers" Source: The Jewish Chronicle by:Eric Silver Jerusalem. Published 2.22.08
Summary: This article's general subject was all about the Israeli vs. Palestinian war that has been going on for a fairly long time now. This particular incident, however, was the Israeli's point of view that their cabinet minister was going to be attacked in the near future by the Shia's leader Hizbollah due to the assasination of the Palestinian's movement operations chief. Apparently, Hizbollah and the Palestinians saw this chief, Imad Mughniyeh, as their defence minister and quoted, "a defence minister for a defence minister." Which, if I'm not mistaken, sounds like a bit of a threat ,does it not? After issuing this open and comforting statement, Israel has tightened up security for all public figures traveling overseas, and bodyguards have been accompanying ministers also, even on private visits. Hizbollah's political leader also promised to wage, "open war until the Zionist cancer disappears." After looking the word Zionist up (haha) I came to the definition of it basically meaning the Jewish people who think it is their right to own the promise land, which Israel and Palestine have indeed been fighting over for quite a long time. According to General Mohammed Ali Jafari,“Hizbollah’s might is increasing with every passing day. In the near future we shall witness the disappearance of this cancerous growth called Israel.” It sounds unsettling to me...
Reaction:
how this relates to one of the APWH Themes: This relates to the theme cultural, religious, and intellectual development because of a few reasons. First of, the reasons for war are as follows: money, power, and religion. This theme popped up in my head because of the fact that both of the religions of these regions are held in extremely high regards and the people of these regions feel very strongly about them. Both of these regions are extremely powerful in the military sense, and are giving each other a run for their money. Israel has one of the most powerful armies in the world, if not now, then used to have. Both of them are culturally rich because their culture is dictated and tied to their religious beliefs. I don't think these societies realize how alike they really are.
historical backround: Well, in short, the backround of this issue was already kind of stated in how this article relates to the APWH themes. This whole conflict was created by the division of land and the extreme difference in religions, which led to difference in politics and government, which led to division of people.
point of view: Obviously, since this is the Jewish Chronicle, we can assume that the views are naturally skewed in every which way. However, it is important to learn how skewed they are by dissecting the article in question. In this particular article, there are many quotes of the opposite leaders so assuming that they are true, those quotes make the article seem less biased.
missing voice: I would have liked to hear from a U.S. leader on the issues going on with the Israeli/Palestinian conflict because even though we are somewhat biased also because of our support of Israel, we can assume that our ideas on the matter will be more factual.
my reaction: I believed this article to be quite disturbing and imagining myself living in a place like Israel or Palestine during this war, it would not be a pleasant place to grow up and i feel terrible for all the poor children and women having to endure constant bomb threats and watching the fight everyday just for their freedom and peace.
