II. Summary:

March 20, 2008 marked the five year anniversary of the US-led invasion of Iraq. Bush believes he is making much success in Iraq while 2/3 of Americans believe we are fighting a pointless war. America has spent $500 billion dollars and over 4,000 American lives on this war. Also, tens of thousands of Iraqis have been killed, along with 175 British troops and 134 troops from other countries. Our military is stretched thin, our reputation in the world is damaged, and the war is a severe threat to our economy. Even after all of this, Iraq is still on the brink of a civil war.

III. Reaction:

a) The AP world theme used in this article is State-building, expansion, and conflict. This is because of the obvious fact that the United States is in conflict with Iraq, and we are fighting a meaningless war that is not worth fighting.

b) Our conflict with Iraq didn’t begin on the bombing of September 11th, but it definitely was a major turning point. After September 11th, 2001 things became hostile with Iraq. In March of 2003 America was forced to invade Iraq because we had to take their dictator, Sadam Hussein out of power, and there was a chance that they were harboring weapons of mass destruction.

c) The writer of this article if definitely an Iraqi citizen. He is most likely a male citizen because of the fact that women don’t have many rights in Iraqi society.

d) This article is filled with bias. Everything said about George Bush is made to sound bad, and that he is evil. It was said that he is endangering America’s economy, fighting a pointless war, bringing Iraq to the brink of a civil war, and that he isn’t backed up by the majority of Americans. Even on the side of this article there is a protester dressed up as George Bush with devil horns.

e) The missing voice from this article would be George Bush, or just any other American citizen. Although I agree with a lot of what the article is saying, George Bush’s decisions have good intentions and aren’t completely bad, and there is more to the story than what is told. You only get the Iraqi point of view from this article, and no American opinions.

f) My overall reaction to the article was that a lot of it is true. I completely feel that this war is not worth fighting because we are loosing so much money and so many lives, it just isn’t worth it. I believe that all war is wrong, but this one in particular is not worth loosing so many lives.

I agree with Rachael, and I think that US is wasting too much time and money on this war. Many people have been affected by this war, either having a family member in Iraq, or being there themselves. If it doesnt end soon, then more people, time, and money will be lost.

Nice article Rachael! I agree with the 2/3 of Americans who think this war is pointless. I think this war is causing mostly negatives to the United States and other countries. While Bush may feel that the war is sucessful at the moment, the truth is shown in this article. With the 4,000 American's killed and innocent Iraqis killed, as well as troops from other countries this war needs to end. Many more deaths will come if the war continues and our economy will worsen. I also agree with Rachael on her thoughts on bias. The author does seem to feel Bush has done very few positives in regard to this war.

I agree with Rachael and everyone else that we are fighting a pointless war. We are just wasting our money away for no good reason. Obvoisly, George Bush is going to say that it has been a success because he doesnt want to make himself look like he has done a crummy job as a president. We should end this war and bring our troops home for good!

I completely agree with you here, because this war has been going on for a long time now, and not much progress has been seen. I saw on the news today that we've reached 4000 deaths and this just needs to stop. I'm not surprised that more than half the population has deemed this war has no point. I can definitely see bias, beause this person makes it seem like our president is evil and wrong. Good topic and article shoice, Rachael!
